He decided to specialise in rehabilitation and prevention in oncology after his mother&#8217;s cancer diagnosis. <br>He conducted his master&#8217;s research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chl.lu\/fr\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.chl.lu\/fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL)<\/a> on the physical, psychological and social benefits of physical activity (within a hospitalised context) during the chemotherapy phase of cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What struck him the most was the overwhelming success regarding physical developments, as well as big gains of self-confidence. He also noted that many people expressed a desire to continue the physical activity, but didn&#8217;t feel ready (physically, mentally or socially) to join a fitness\/dance\/swim club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar-30b1997e\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar\" data-percent=\"74\" data-duration=\"3\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__outer\"><span class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__outer__title\">Inspiration collecting and plan forming <\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area__bar\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His tutor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Freerk-Baumann#research-items\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Freerk-Baumann#research-items\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Freerk Baumann<\/a>, showed him that in Germany, at that time, 1,500 oncology sports groups already existed outside of a hospital context.<br>So Charel decided to create Luxembourg&#8217;s very first oncology sports group (us!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar-f296986f\" class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar has-tooltip\" data-percent=\"100\" data-duration=\"3\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__outer\"><span class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__outer__title\">The ALGSO is up and running!<\/span><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area\"><div class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area__bar\"><span class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area__tooltip\"><span class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__number\">100<\/span><span class=\"wp-block-themeisle-blocks-progress-bar__area__arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to the help and support of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chl.lu\/fr\/docteur-duhem-caroline\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.chl.lu\/fr\/docteur-duhem-caroline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Caroline Duhem<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Marc-Diederich-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Marc-Diederich-2\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Marc Diederich<\/a>, he was able to found the ALGSO: a safe space where cancer warriors could continue their physical activity in classes led by physiotherapists, while being surrounded by people in similar situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:38px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-algso-today\">The ALGSO Today:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ALGSO is run by highly motivated volunteers who either work in the field of oncology, had a cancer themselves, or had someone dear to them who was a member.<br><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-custom-color-4-color\">We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their passion and dedication, without which, we would not function.<\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, we remain committed to fostering a community where every member feels supported, inspired, and empowered.
